Because many palliative sedation practices originate in the emergency department (ED), the aim of this study was to determine ED patient and physician satisfaction with palliative sedation care and to understand the factors associated with this care. We performed a prospective cohort study of patients with advanced dementia, patients' family caregivers, and ED staff who participated in the palliative sedation practice. Patients and family members completed questionnaires at the initial consultation and discharge from the ED. Physicians filled out a questionnaire at discharge. Data from the questionnaires were analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests. Of the 115 patients enrolled in the study, 46% were found to be eligible for palliative sedation and were enrolled in palliative sedation. These 46 patients had a median age of 84 years, and 65% were men.
